The Board held two education sessions on the extractive activities research project. In the first session, staff from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) provided an overview of the SEC Concept Release on Possible Revisions to the Disclosure Requirements Relating to Oil and Gas Reserves, which closed for comment in February 2008.

The Board held its fourth education session on the extractive activities research project.
In the first part of the session, John Etherington from the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Oil and Gas Reserves Committee gave an update on a joint project with the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) to compare and, where possible, bring into convergence the petroleum and minerals definitions and classification systems.

At this session, the project team discussed the suitability of fair value as the measurement objective in accounting for minerals and oil and gas reserves and resources.

This session continued from the presentations on minerals and oil and gas reserves and resources in April 2005 and provided the Board with a further opportunity to ask questions about the key components of the definitions of reserves and resources that are used in each industry.

The focus of these sessions was on minerals and oil and gas reserves and resources, including an overview of the estimation of reserves and resources and of some of the major reserve/resource reporting codes used in the industries.
