Chronology

2008

  • On 31 March, the XBRL Team released the Exposure Draft of the IFRS Taxonomy 2008
  • On 29 February, the XBRL Team circulated a first Draft of the IFRS Taxonomy 2008 to the XQRT members
  • On 17 January, the XBRL Quality Review Team held its first meeting.

2007

  • On 13 December, the XBRL Advisory Council held its first meeting.
  • On 4 December, the XBRL team reveals the IFRS Taxonomy Architecture Paper and the IFRS Taxonomy Prototype
  • On 3 December at the XBRL International conference in Vancouver, the XBRL team together with the US SEC and the Japan FSA presents a vision to align the architecture of their taxonomy (IFRS, US GAAP and EDINET)
  • On 18 October, the IAS Board held an XBRL session
  • In October, the Trustees approved the selection of inaugural members of the XBRL Advisory Council (XAC) and the XBRL Quality Review Team (XQRT)
  • Early October, the new structure of the XBRL team is revealed:
    • an Accounting pillar, managed by Holger Obst who became a permanent staff member after a 6-months ‘student’ internship
    • a Technology pillar, managed by Maciej Piechocki after some years as ‘student’ intern
  • On 17 September Andrea Felkai joined the XBRL team for a 6-month internship
  • On 29 August Elisabetta Barone joined the XBRL team for a 6-month internship
  • On 22 August, the XBRL team releases the first XBRL Update, the newsletter of the IASC Foundation on XBRL activities
  • On 16th July, the XBRL team initiates the re-development of the IFRS Taxonomy and commits to deliver the IFRS Taxonomy 2008 “at the same time, with the same quality and in the same languages” than the Bound Volume.
  • On 16th July Valeria Moruzzi joined the XBRL team for a 6-month internship
  • In July, Josef Macdonald completed his secondment and rejoined Ernst & Young.
  • On 2nd July the Trustees approved the 2007-2009 XBRL team Strategy Plan
  • On 16 April, Olivier Servais joined the IASC Foundation as XBRL team leader

2006

  • Kurt Ramin again re-appointed Chair of XBRL International.
  • Josef Macdonald sits as part of the Interim XSB, but chooses not to run for the board when it is constituted in June 2006, to devote time to administering the IFRS XBRL team.
  • IFRS XBRL team welcomes new members Michal Piechocki (Poland) and Lukas Pruschke (Germany)
  • The website www.iasb.org/XBRL is released.
  • IASB, IASC Foundation Trustees, IASC Foundation staff and IASB working groups request details on XBRL in response to statements made by SEC Chairman Cox and other regulators.
  • Josef Macdonald introduces XBRL to IASB at their February London meeting.
  • Josef Macdonald and Kurt Ramin present XBRL to Trustees of the IASC Foundation/IASB at their March London meeting.  They are invited to present further details to the Trustees at their June Berlin meeting.
  • IFRS-GP 2006 taxonomy is released
  • XBRL International membership grows to 400+.

2005

  • Kurt Ramin re-appointed Chair of XBRL International.
  • Josef Macdonald appointed Chair of Domain Working Group.
  • Dr Alan Teixeira appointed to IASB technical position.
  • IFRS-GP re-released in Final form.
  • 5 Student Interns appointed at IASC Foundation [Joel Vicente (Portugal), Maciej Piechocki (Poland), Harald Schmitt (Germany), Bartosz Ochocki (Poland), Timo Philipp (Germany)].
  • 3 language linkbases released as drafts (German, Italian & Portuguese).
  • XBRL International membership grows to 350+.

2004

  • Financial Reporting Taxonomy Architecture documentation released as Candidate Recommendation.
  • IFRS Taxonomy Working Group releases world‘s first 2.1 financial reporting taxonomy.
  • Kurt Ramin appointed Chair of XBRL International and vice chair of XBRL in Europe.
  • Josef Macdonald appointed Vice-Chair of Domain Working Group.
  • IFRS Taxonomy Working Group releases IFRS-GP taxonomy, including disclosures for banks and similar institutions.
  • Teresa Schiavina of Italy appointed as inaugural IASC Foundation XBRL Intern.
  • IASC Foundation and XII host 10th XBRL International Conference in  Brussels.
  • XBRL International membership grows to 300+.

2003

  • Specification 2.1 released providing stable platform for XBRL development.
  • Conformance/Test Suite released to boost XBRL interoperability.
  • IFRS Working Group help drive Consortium domain and specification activities.
  • IASC Foundation appoints Josef Macdonald inaugural XBRL Practice Fellow.
  • IFRS taxonomy first to publish in XBRL version 2.1 – in draft, prior to finalisation of specification 2.1.
  • XBRL International membership grows to 200.

2002

  • IAS "Panel of Experts" meet in Singapore to build first full IAS taxonomy.
  • Charlie Hoffman joins IAS Taxonomy Working Group.
  • Josef Macdonald appointed Chair of IAS Taxonomy Working Group.
  • Ad Hoc IAS Working Group formed from international group of volunteers.
  • Release of IAS PFS and EDAP Taxonomies.
  • XBRL International membership grows to 140.

2001

  • XBRL holds its first international meeting in London.
  • Morgan Stanley announces that it has tagged its financials, sent information to the SEC in XBRL format and posted them to its web site.
  • Development begins on XBRL for General Ledger, to allow tagged data to be moved into and out of the general ledger. Use will serve as a bridge between business reporting and transaction reporting.
  • XBRL International expands its membership to 85 members.

2000

  • XFRML is rebranded to eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL)
  • First XBRL specification is released.
  • Bill Gates declares XML to be the next revolution on the Internet and announces the .net strategy, which includes XML tools in upcoming Microsoft products.
  • Development begins on XBRL for IAS by David Prather.

1999

  • Charles Hoffman investigates how XML could be used for electronic reporting of financial information.
  • Hoffman begins developing prototypes of financial statements and audit schedules using XML.
  • The eXtensible Financial Reporting Mark-up Language (XFRML), the precursor to XBRL, is born.
  • 12 member initial Steering Committee formed, including former Big 5, and Kurt Ramin – IASC Foundation Commercial Director.
